Stable, Affordable, Fiber- Coupled Laser Module Added to PTI Catalog.

Power Technology Inc., laser experts in the photonics industry for 45 years, is introducing a new line of temperature-resistant, stable beam, fiber-coupled laser modules at the 2016 Photonics West show in San Francisco. The new laser modules, called the Fiber PM, offer remote delivery of beams in environments unsuitable for laser modules themselves by delivering the beam through fiber optic cable.  With a coupling efficiency that allows the precise power output required, the Fiber PM is ideal for OEM and industrial applications. The affordable price makes the Fiber PM ideal for any application requiring a stable beam without breaking the budget.

The Fiber PM is a cost-effective laser module designed to deliver a stable multi-mode or single-mode beam wherever you need it via a fiber coupled output. The Fiber PM comes standard with thermal management and a quality laser driver. Available in wavelengths from 405 nm to 780 nm and powers from 5 mW to 20 mW, the temperature resistant fiber will deliver a quality beam even in rugged environments. Fiber core size ranges from 4 um to 9 um.

“Often a stable beam is needed in an environment that isn’t appropriate for the electronics inside a semiconductor laser module. The fiber coupling makes perfect sense to deliver that beam where it is needed while maintaining a friendlier environment for the electronics themselves” Walter Burgess, VP of Engineering and Sales for Power Technology Inc., said.

Photonics West is the premier photonics and laser event. With more than 1,250 companies, this exhibition continues to be the flagship event to find the latest products, tools, and applications for research or business needs.

Power Technology will be demonstrating the Fiber PM and other new, cutting edge laser products at booth 4270 in Exhibit Hall D this week during the trade show. Power Technology has been an annual fixture at the trade show for over 25 years.

Power Technology, Inc., established in 1969, is a leading manufacturer of lasers for OEM cinema, analytical, biomedical, industrial, semiconductor inspection, defense & security, and machine vision applications. Power Technology launches USB powered laser module.

Posted by Kristopher Hesson on Feb 16, 2016 2:44:30 PM

Power Technology Inc., laser experts in the photonics industry for 45 years, is launching a unique new series of lasers at the 2016 Photonics West show in San Francisco today. Dubbed “The Modern OEM Laser,” the USB-L is a laser module that is both powered and controlled via standard USB computer ports. Perfect for bio-analytics, research, industrial, and semiconductor applications, the convenience and control provided by the USB interface make the USB-L an attractive, affordable choice for a variety of situations.

The USB-L comes in both square and round packages ranging from 405 nm to 780 nm and output powers from 1 mW to 50 mW. Connecting via USB Micro Type B, the red and IR versions connect to USB 1 or USB 2 ports while green, blue and violet models are accessible via USB 2 ports. All models offer consistent power and a custom graphical user interface for precise control of output power level and on/off state.

Walter Burgess, VP of Engineering and Sales for Power Technology Inc., commented on the development of the USB-L laser module product line stating “Industrial equipment is often computer controlled so we wanted to provide a complimentary technology that is easy to implement. Powering and controlling the laser module via the well understood and ubiquitous USB protocol gives manufacturers, analysts, and researchers more control options. Universities will value the simplicity and reliability of the USB-L as well.”

Light, Beauty, and the Postal Service?

Posted by Walter Burgess on Jan 27, 2016 1:44:38 PM

2015's International Year of Light was a magnificent event. It brought attention to the photonics industry like no other event in history. One of the coolest commemorations of the Year of Light took the form of postage stamps. Stamps featuring photonics concepts and the Year of Light logos were printed by many countries globally. Not only are these stamps practical but they are also visually stunning to look at.

Wynter is in full swing and Christmas is just a few days away. All the houses are decorated and the presents are stuffed beneath the twinkling tree. Of course, no Christmas can be complete without the beautiful Christmas lights we’ve come to expect that brighten the long nights and help distract us from the too short days.

Introducing Wavelength Wednesdays

Posted by Kristopher Hesson on Oct 14, 2015 11:10:10 AM

Lasers are becoming more commonplace every day. From laser pointers to lasers mounted on military drones the applications for laser light seem to be endless. We love lasers and talking about lasers but the general public doesn’t realize what an integral role lasers play in their everyday life.

Everyone that owns a Blue-ray player uses lasers and most of them don’t know it! Lasers are used in manufacturing, retail, university research, medicine and countless other ways. We even have customers that use our lasers to identify certain fluorescing elements within a biological sample!

Jail time? You’ll put an eye out! Laser Safety in the Aeronautics Age

Posted by Kristopher Hesson on Oct 12, 2015 2:07:19 PM

William recently wrote an interesting post for the site regarding the maker movement, potential safety issues and professional laser manufacturing safety guidelines. This is a follow up to that post in a way. Let’s talk about jail time…

As someone who not only makes a living from photonics but is passionate about lasers, I try to stay on top of what is happening in the industry. An easy tool for this is using Google alerts. Every day I get an email from Google telling me the newest information from across the web that relates to lasers. I get some pretty great stories this way. From laser illuminated projection showings of Star Wars (yes, please!) to laser razors (probably impossible) and, Gatling gun lasers that shoot down enemy drones (wow!).
